Atlas CTB™ Concrete Tower Base To Be Introduced At WINDPOWER 2009
SPARTANBURG, SC—Tindall Corporation announces the introduction of the Atlas CTBTM Concrete Tower Base, with patent pending, at WINDPOWER 2009, May 4-7, in Chicago, IL, Booth 3485. Tindall’s design team of engineers and specialty consultants developed the CTB hybrid tower to answer the need for higher-efficiency turbine output and an economical tower/foundation installation.
According to Tindall Chairman and CEO William Lowndes III, “Our Atlas CTB, which resulted from extensive research, is the most economical way for wind farms to raise hub heights beyond 80 meters to 100 meters plus. All CTB components are road and rail transportable. Erection takes no more than one week on a cured foundation. The Atlas CTB simple ring foundation requires 1/4 to 1/3 of the concrete found in conventional tower footings. This foundation results in lower soil pressure, reduced tendency for settlement and better accommodation of uplift forces. In large wind farm installations, the foundation installation schedule is significantly reduced.”
In a typical application, the Atlas hybrid tower base diameter is 15–18 meters, with a standard steel monopole upper section starting at approximately 28 meters. The steel monopole may extend to hub heights of 100–110 meters. System performance benefits from a higher tower natural frequency and the inherent damping properties of concrete construction. Enhanced life-cycles of the blades, turbine and other components are expected. The low-maintenance base requires no painting or bolt torquing; the anticipated service life is 50 years.
